The Theological Education Institute (TEI) was founded in Boston in 1990 by John C. Rankin, and has been headquartered in his native Hartford since 1992. John was engaged in pastoral, then pro-life ministry, from 1978-1991. The TEI is an LLC, and not a not-for-profit organization. This allows freedom for interface with the partisan political world, where the priority of the vision for "first the Gospel, then politics..." and a passion for "the love of hard questions" is always in place; where "the biblical nature of a level playing field" for all debated issues to be equally heard is in place, confident that the truth will rise to the top.
The TEI is engaged in bringing theological education to the church, in preaching and
teaching, and into the larger social order. The most well known means is the Mars Hill Forum series, started in 1993, where honest public conversation in the face of debated theological, cultural and political issues is in view. The Mars Hill Society, part of the TEI, is a membership association seeking to advance the ethos of the Mars Hill Forum series through relationships and a political philosophy, aiming to see biblically committed believers run for office, and serve religious, political and economic liberty for all people equally.
